Brandy, Cognac and Armagnac
These fine liquors have emerged as a popular choice to accompany premium cigars. Cognacs have undertones of vanilla and spice that excite the palate, while brandies and armagnacs have complex structures that have an almost sweet and smoky element. These spirits only enhance the experience of a fine cigar.
Port
Port, depending on who you ask, port is the perfect partner for a great cigar. The sweetness of a vintage Port blends perfectly with a full-bodied smoke. Younger ports because of their stronger tannins make a good pair because they can smooth out the rough edges of a lesser quality cigar. Even tawny ports with their wood and nutty characteristics pair very nicely.
Bourbon
Bourbon is North America’s only native spirit, born over 200 years ago. It is distilled from a mash of grain, which contains corn balanced with barley and either wheat or rye. Bourbon achieves its rich color and its characteristics from aging in new white oak barrels that have been charred to caramelize the natural sugars in the wood.
Rum
Rum can be a bit unorthodox when it comes to pairing with cigars. However aged rums can make a great match because they have a sweet profile that is combined with molasses flavors that can smooth out the darker notes in a less expensive cigar.
Scotch
The classic choice, nothing can replace it. The smoky quality of a fine single malt scotch joins perfectly with a premium cigar. Aged single malt scotches are premium beverages that have the complexity and depth of flavor to stand up to a cigar.
